Behind Closed Doors exhibition

Design direction + exhibition design + photography

“Everyone should have access to good food. No one should have to go to bed hungry.”

Behind Closed Doors was a collaboration between three photographers, Ursula Kelly, Huw Nicholls and James Lane, graphic designer John Reeves, and Professor Jon May of Queen Mary University of London.

The 2018 exhibition, on behalf of End Hunger UK, explored the nature and scale of food insecurity in Britain and shared some of the experiences of those living through this crisis. The show toured UK cities ending up in the Houses of Parliament in an attempt to influence government policy.

Creating a touring show on a very limited budget was a creative and logistical challenge.

For maximum effectiveness, we needed to attract as much media attention as possible, so bold photos and graphics that were easy to transport and set up were key.

The End Hunger UK Twitter feed at the time, was where a lot of the activity was focussed.

Huw Nicholls and I created a set of food photos, inspired by the testimonies of those living in food poverty.
